Anaphylaxis Update
A new substitute peanut butter product is being marketed to consumers as a safe alternative for children to bring to schools in place of peanut butter. The Waterloo Region District School Board asks that parents refrain from including these kinds of products in your child’s lunches or snacks.
These products tend to look, taste, and smell very much like peanut butter. While the product is nut free, it mimics a known allergen that causes anaphylaxis in some children to the degree that it is indistinguishable from the allergen. It is a convincing substitute, opening up the possibility that it can be confused as peanut butter, or worse yet, peanut butter could be confused as this soy-based product.
The safety and health of our students is our first priority, which is why our schools have procedures in place to minimize risk of anaphylaxis reactions in our students. We sincerely appreciate your cooperation in avoiding the use of these products to assist in our continued efforts to create a safe, caring and inclusive learning environment for all students.
Movember is alive and well at Queensmount! Several male teachers are sporting various moustache styles as they support awareness of prostate cancer.
THANK YOU to everyone who was able to join us for our Family Fun Night on Wednesday! We had a lot of fun meeting parents and playing volleyball. Thank you to our School Council for supporting the night with fantastic door
prizes! Please watch for our next Family Fun Night coming up sometime in February!
NO PEANUT PRODUCTS, Please
Please be aware that several of our students have severe life-threatening allergies. This is a medical condition that causes a severe reaction to specific foods and can result in death within minutes. Although this may or may not affect your child’s class directly, please send foods to school that are free from peanut products. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
If your child has a severe allergy or medical condition, please let us know.
Safe School Arrival
Please call our Attendance Check number at (519) 570-8119, ext 3672 when your child is absent. This is an automated system. When prompted to leave a message, please leave your child's first and last name, his/her homeroom teacher's name, and the reason for the absence. This number is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Students are required under the Education Act to provide a written note excusing their absence. We track chronic lates and absences and take appropriate measures.
Professional Activity Dates
This year, full day Professional Activity Days are scheduled on the following six dates:
*September 23 * November 18 *January 20 * February 3 * April 20 * June 1
November 18th is for Parent-Teacher Interviews. The rest are for professional development (when staff share best teaching practices, coordinate their efforts and learn strategies to teach your children) or for assessment and evaluation of student learning. There will be no school on these dates.
School Council 2011 - 12
The next meeting of the Queensmount School Council will be on Wednesday, October 26th at 6:45 p.m. in the school library. A school council gives advice and ideas on school operations. All parents are invited and encouraged to attend. Please join us! It’s a great way to meet neighbours and learn about your school.
Checks: When writing a check to the school, please address it to "Queensmount Senior School funds." The bank is becoming more particular that checks are addressed this way.
